Site design blueprints for agencies building with AI

The Problem
Small web and branding shops now ship client sites out of Lovable, Cursor, Framer, Relume, and Webflow in a weekend. The client can tell. Purple gradient. Inter. Four cards in a grid. Giant bold headline, then more cards stacked inside cards, then a beige void. Agency operators name those tells in public. Buyers feel them without the vocabulary. If the launch smells like a model, the retainer smells like a model, and the shop loses the next project on the sales call they thought the speed would win.
The generation layer went mainstream in about a year. Lovable crossed $400M ARR in February 2026 with 25 million projects and on the order of 100,000 new projects a day (later usage prints ran even hotter). Cursor hit $2B ARR in under 24 months. A 15,000-developer survey put daily AI coding at 73% of engineering teams in 2026, up from 41% in 2025. Around 40% of web designers now use AI daily; among those who use it, about half generate full page layouts. r/webdesign sits at 971.7K members. The workflow is not experimental. The taste layer never showed up.
Fixing it after the prompt is the expensive version. Shops buy Claude skill files, $59/year prompt packs, and $200/hr freelance CD reviews. They send whole sites back when a founder says “this looks AI.” Google Labs open-sourced DESIGN.md on April 21, 2026 so agents would stop returning the statistical center — and community indexes already list hundreds of free DESIGN.md and SKILL.md files. A pattern that looked original in early 2025 was a cliché by mid-2026. “AI slop web design” is the complaint, not a niche tweet. Direction has to arrive before Webflow, Framer, Relume, Lovable, or Cursor opens. Agency workflows still start at generation.
The Solution
Siteprimer is a Keep / Kill / Push one-pager sold to 2-to-20-person shops before the build tool boots. Keep: the two or three visual moves that belong to this client. Kill: the tells buyers now spot (gradient, Inter, card grid, empty hero). Push: the one risky choice that makes the page not look like every other AI page this week. The agency still ships in the tool it already pays for. You sell judgment, not another generator.
Price against the human alternative, not against a free file. Frontend: $299 audit of one AI page the shop already shipped — marked tells, short memo, invitation to do it right next time. Core: $1,500 per-project direction sheet, 48-hour turn, one client, one category. Continuity: $2,000/mo team license — living pattern library for the categories they repeat, two sheets included, unlimited seats inside the agency. Bait: free category call sheet (SaaS, DTC, local services) behind email. Manual first. The first ten sheets are handwritten. Automate competitor scans and category defaults only after a human sheet still reads better than the draft.
ContentSnare ($35–$215/mo annual) is the adjacent process product: it chases logos and copy. It does not make the creative call. Do not confuse intake with direction.
How it works:
- Intake — Agency answers a tight set on brand, three competitor URLs, category, and (for audits) the shipped page. Fifteen minutes, not a brand-strategy workshop
- Call sheet — Strategist returns Keep / Kill / Push: refusals, type and palette constraints, section order, the one push. PDF plus a paste block the designer drops into Cursor, Lovable, Framer, Relume, or Webflow
- Build — Agency generates in their stack. The sheet is constraints, not a mock. Success metric is first-round client approval, not prettier Figma
- Library — After two or three paid sheets in one category, repeats fold into the $2,000/mo license so the shop stops buying the same SaaS-onboarding call at $1,500 a pop
Market Research
Production commoditized. Differentiation did not get a SKU. That gap is the timing, and it is already cooling at the edges — so move while agencies still feel the slop tax on every launch.
- Generation is the default. Lovable $400M ARR by Feb 2026, 25M projects, ~100k new/day. Cursor $2B ARR inside 24 months (Bloomberg, Feb 2026). 73% of engineering teams on daily AI coding in 2026 vs 41% in 2025. ~40% of web designers use AI daily; 93% of pros used AI on design tasks in a recent three-month window (Rudys.AI / UI Things).
- The market around the tools is huge. AI-powered website builders: about $3.1–$3.75B in 2024–25, printed toward $17–$31B by 2033–35 (16–26%+ CAGR depending on the cut). Broader AI design tools: $6.74B in 2025 toward $18.16B by 2030 (~21.9% CAGR). Website design services crawl at ~8–10% CAGR — the human layer agencies still invoice, now under pressure to justify.
- Search demand is for briefs and builders, not for this product. “Creative brief” 2,400/mo at $6 CPC; “creative brief template” 1,600/mo; “AI website design” 1,900/mo at $24 CPC; “AI website builder” 40,500/mo at $31 CPC. “Website design brief” is ~50/mo. There is no SEO category for a pre-build direction sheet. First 100 customers are comments and DMs.
- The file format standardized and the insult went mainstream. DESIGN.md, Apache 2.0, April 21, 2026, aimed at Claude Code, Cursor, and Copilot. Venngage noted shoppers returning “AI slop gifts” by January 2026. r/webdev “AI winter” thread 70+ comments; r/vibecoding “all AI websites look the same” 40+; r/webdesign 971.7K. Julian Cole’s creative-brief video: 101K views. HubSpot’s: ~28K.
- Google Trends is a warning, not a green light. “AI website design” rose ~60% from Sep 2025 into a May–July 2026 peak, then cooled toward ~25 by late August. If Framer and Lovable ship better defaults in two quarters, willingness to pay for a sheet drops with the pain. Ship while the tell is still obvious.
Stage: emerging niche on top of an early-mainstream generation market. No incumbent sells Keep / Kill / Push per client, per category, as a line item between a free file and a $15K sprint.
Competitive Landscape
Crowded on both sides. Empty in the middle — if you sell judgment, not a zip of prompts.
- Prompt libraries — UX/UI Principles: 631+ prompts, 185 cited UX principles, $59/year. PromptPack: 75+ site prompts for Claude Code, Cursor, v0, Lovable, Bolt. Same buyer, generic constraints. A year of files still cannot look at this HVAC client’s competitor set on Thursday.
- Fractional creative directors — $1,200–$1,500/day; retainers commonly $5K–$15K/mo. The agency already benchmarks against this. $1,500 for a sheet is one CD day without hiring the person.
- Boutique brand / web sprints — Proof of Work Studio: Brand Sprint $15,000, Web Sprint $10K–$20K. Market band $5K–$30K. Real direction. Wrong altitude and price for a 12-person shop shipping six SaaS sites a quarter.
- Generation tools — Relume Pro from $14/mo, Site Builder Starter from $18/mo, no per-seat tax (Sep 2026 verify). Framer $10 Basic / $30 Pro. Lovable from $21/mo on credits. Webflow remains the CMS many agencies still deliver on. They generate. They do not judge. If they add a “don’t look generic” toggle, your file dies; your per-client call does not, unless the call was generic too.
- Free middle — DESIGN.md (Google Labs), HubSpot / Asana / Monday creative-brief templates, designmd.app-class indexes (500+ DESIGN.md files), aiskill.market-class SKILL.md lists (150+). Zero paid moat as a template.
- ContentSnare (adjacent) — Client file chasing, $35–$215/mo annual ($42–$258 monthly). Logos, copy, uploads. Stops before Keep / Kill / Push. Mention it so buyers do not say “we already have intake.”
Your Opportunity
Do not ship another template pack. The file is free. The judgment is not. Sit between $59/year prompts and a $10K–$15K sprint at $1,500 per project, then license the repeats at $2,000/mo. Wedge customer: 2–20 people, no senior CD on payroll, ships enough volume that one avoided revision day pays for the sheet. Manual first — ten agencies, handwritten calls — then a pattern library built from real kills, not guessed category defaults. Distribution is grind: r/webdev, r/vibecoding, X teardown comments, 20 LinkedIn DMs a week. The exact product phrase gets 50 searches a month. Be the account tagged when someone posts the purple gradient.
Business Model
Productized service that can become SaaS once the library exists. Do not pretend the PDF is software in month one.
- Category Call Sheet ($0) — One vertical, Keep / Kill / Push, email gate. Shows format and taste.
- AI Slop Audit ($299) — One shipped page, marked tells, memo for the next revision. Sales tool that happens to invoice.
- Pre-Build Direction Sheet ($1,500 / project) — 48 hours. Core SKU. Agency bills it through to the client as a line item when they can.
- Team Workflow License ($2,000/mo) — Pattern library for their categories, two sheets/mo included, unlimited internal seats.
Unit Economics
- ~$50–$150 — Variable cost on a manual sheet (agent draft of competitor scan + PDF render). The constraint is founder hours, not tokens
- $1,500 — Core price; one avoided designer-day of revisions is the ROI story
- ~90%+ — Gross on audits and sheets until you staff a second strategist
- 12 paid sheets in 90 days — Verified-report base case at 10 audits/week, 40% take, 25% close — treat every ratio as unproven
- $90K–$150K — Honest year-one if per-project holds; $720K/yr is 30 team licenses, which is the actual ceiling question
If buyers say “that is what our CD already does,” the $1,500 line dies and you are a fractional CD at $1,200/day. Kill that objection with a marked-up audit of their live page, not a category PDF they could download.
Recommended Tech Stack
MVP is a PDF and a Stripe link. Do not build an “AI creative director” until ten sheets have made money.
- Next.js + Vercel — Marketing site, audit upload, intake form, customer dashboard for past sheets.
- Stripe — $299, $1,500, $2,000/mo. Checkout links are enough for the first ten. Customer portal when licenses start.
- PDF generation — @react-pdf/renderer or Gotenberg. One-pager: Keep / Kill / Push, type specimens, refusal list, paste-ready system prompt.
- Notion or Convex — Call-sheet library: category, kill-list, push patterns, anonymized examples. Convex if you want auth and a real app; Notion if you are still the production backend.
- Optional later — Firecrawl or similar for competitor URL scans; Claude for a first draft the human rewrites. Never auto-send the draft.
AI Prompts to Build This
Copy and paste these into Claude, Cursor, or your favorite AI tool.
1. Project Setup
Create a Next.js App Router + TypeScript + Tailwind app named “Siteprimer.” Routes: / (marketing), /audit (upload a URL + screenshot), /intake (brand, competitors, category), /app (list of sheets). Stripe SKUs: audit $299, direction_sheet $1500, team_license $2000/mo. Store records in Convex (or Prisma + Postgres): clients, projects, call_sheets (keep TEXT[], kill TEXT[], push TEXT[], category, pdf_url), audits (url, tells JSONB, memo). Env: STRIPE_*, OPENAI_API_KEY or ANTHROPIC_API_KEY. No website generator. Output is a direction PDF plus a copy-paste prompt block.2. Keep / Kill / Push PDF
Build a server action generateCallSheet(projectId). Input: brand notes, three competitor URLs, category enum (saas, dtc, local_services, other). Draft with Claude using a strict schema: keep (2-3 items), kill (4-8 anti-slop tells plus category cliches), push (exactly one risky move), type_rules, palette_rules, section_order, paste_prompt (plain text the user drops into Cursor/Lovable/Framer). Human-in-the-loop: status stays "draft" until an admin confirms. Render a one-page PDF. Never invent a logo. Kill list must include purple gradient, Inter-as-default, four-card grids, and empty hero space unless the human deletes them.3. Landing Page
Marketing page for Siteprimer. Headline: “Direction before generation.” Sub: “Keep / Kill / Push one-pager for agencies shipping with AI. Before Webflow, Framer, Relume, Lovable, or Cursor.” Sections: the tells (show three anonymized AI-page screenshots with marks), pricing ($299 audit / $1,500 sheet / $2,000/mo team) anchored against $1,200–$1,500/day fractional CD and $10K–$15K brand sprints, how it works (4 steps), FAQ: not a DESIGN.md pack, not a prompt library, not ContentSnare. CTA: free category call sheet. Typography that is not Inter. No purple gradient. Dark text, paper background, one sharp accent.4. Branding Package
Brand sheet for Siteprimer. Name reads as a primer, not a builder. Icon: a red pencil killing a card-grid thumbnail. Palette: paper, ink, one vermilion kill-mark. Type: a real display face plus a workhorse that is not Inter. Voice: senior CD in a crit, not a SaaS onboarding email. Three rules: always show a killed tell, never show generated UI as the product, always name the category. Deliver hex, type spec, and three teardown caption examples.Sources
