The Problem
A day-hiker starts a 12-mile ridge with a full bladder, electrolyte packets, and a plan: sip every 20 minutes, salt at mile four. By mile six the temperature has jumped, the climb is steeper than the map implied, and the schedule is already a lie. They either overdrink on the flats and run dry on the ridge, or they forget until the headache arrives. Dehydration shows up as cramps, altitude sluggishness, and a hike that ends two hours early.
The tracking tools people already own make this worse. Apple Health and Garmin Connect will log a bottle if you remember to tap them. Kitchen drink-reminder apps fire on a wall clock. None of them know you just gained 1,800 feet in 90-degree heat, or that your sweat rate at 9,000 feet is nothing like the one you trained at sea level. Hydration needs can swing two to three times between a cool forest walk and an alpine push. Packet timing is a second unpaid job sequenced by memory. Nobody has a pocket system that updates when the mountain does.
The Solution
HydroTrail is a trail-first hydration coach, not a kitchen water tracker with a hiking sticker. Before you leave the trailhead you set body stats, a sweat-rate estimate (or a default by sex, weight, and effort), and which electrolyte or carb packets you actually carry. Once GPS lock is in, the app treats the hike as a live environment: elevation from the phone, temperature and humidity from a weather pull cached at the trailhead, pace from the track. The output is not a chart. It is a sip target, a next-packet time, and a watch tap you can obey with one hand on a pole.
The product is deliberately narrow. It does not replace AllTrails or Strava. It does the job those apps treat as a footnote: keep you from bonking because your water plan was written for yesterday’s weather. Offline is a requirement — last-known weather plus live GPS altitude and pace, sync in the lot. Battery discipline is the product: coarse GPS on flats, tighter sampling on climbs, haptics on the watch instead of a glowing phone.

- Apple Health / Garmin Connect / AllTrails — Indirect. AllTrails owns the trailhead-open habit. Garmin owns the watch. Hydration features are fixed-interval or self-reported. That is your install path, not your moat.
Your Opportunity
MyHydrate will not add GPS-altitude sweat curves; it would confuse the 90 percent of users who drink at a desk. Moikit will not drop to a $9 software SKU; the hardware margin is the company. CamelBak will not become a coaching app. Win on three things they will not chase: (1) offline, elevation-aware sip timing, (2) packet-level electrolyte prompts without a branded lock-in, (3) a watch-first UX that assumes trekking poles, not a kitchen counter.
