PDF Redaction Preflight for Small Firms
Check an exported PDF for recoverable text and metadata, then record a file-specific review before sharing. Preliminary concept.
A small professional-services firm has an awkward final step when sharing a client document: someone needs to check the exported PDF, not just the marks visible in the editor. The proposed buyer is the operations manager or reviewer responsible for that handoff. The job is to catch suspicious recoverable text, hidden metadata and an unreviewed export before the file leaves the team. The hypothesis is that a separate preflight report would make this handoff easier to repeat. The reviewer needs to know which file was inspected, what was checked and which findings still need attention. An approval attached to an earlier version should not quietly apply to a replacement file.
Built for Small Business Owners, Freelancers.
Build a review workspace for an already-redacted PDF. Keep the document on the reviewer's device in the initial prototype and store only explicitly approved review metadata.
Weekend scope: about 12 hours.
The Problem
Concept proposal. Buyer demand and pricing remain to be validated.

Market Research
The initial reading includes a Princeton CITP study of redaction failures published in 2011. It discusses failures in a nonrandom historical document corpus. That is useful…

Business Model
Proposed model: a software subscription for a review workspace. A solo plan could cover personal review history; a team plan could add shared approval records and configurable…

1. Project Setup
Build PDF Preflight, a review workspace for already-redacted PDFs. Use Next.js and TypeScript for the interface. Use Supabase Auth as the only login and Supabase for saved review metadata. Keep PDF contents on the user's device; use synthetic files for the demo. Create a review list, a review detail screen and a findings panel. Tables: - file_reviews(id, owner_id, file_hash, filename, state, created_at) - redaction_findings(id, review_id, page_number, check_name, result, note) - approval_events(id, review_id, reviewer_id, decision, created_at) Restrict saved records to their owner and show incomplete checks explicitly. Do not build: billing, external AI uploads, OCR, enterprise permissions or a redaction editor. Done when: a signed-in user can open a synthetic PDF, save a file-specific review and reopen its findings.
2. Core Feature
Implement the file-specific review flow in PDF Preflight. Render a synthetic PDF and expose extracted text and available metadata. Let a reviewer inspect each finding and record a decision with a note. Bind every decision to the original file hash. A changed file must start a new review with a link to the earlier version. Show unsupported or failed checks as incomplete, with an explanation. Done when: replacing a reviewed file cannot inherit its earlier approval.
3. Landing Page
Create a landing page for PDF Preflight aimed at small professional-services teams. Explain the proposed final-export review and file-specific approval report. Show a fictional document, findings panel and revision history. Describe the prototype's limits without promising complete detection or compliance. Add a waitlist form stored in a waitlist table using the existing database. Offer one call to action: join the pilot waitlist. Done when: the page explains the workflow and stores a valid waitlist submission.
4. Branding Package
Use a design or image tool to create a branding package for PDF Preflight. Design a restrained wordmark and a document-review symbol. Use warm neutral surfaces with a clear emerald approval accent. Provide accessible colors for pending, reviewed and incomplete states. Include light and dark marks and a square application icon. Avoid shields or badges that imply certified security or compliance. Done when: the exported assets and usage notes work at desktop and small icon sizes.
